CDMA iPhone in engineering tests, may arrive in January, says John Gruber thumbnail

It’s not as cut-and-dry as last night’s declaration that a new Retina Display-equipped iPod Touch is due in the next few weeks , but our man John Gruber just put up a lengthy post on the long-rumored CDMA iPhone for Verizon in which he says the mythical handset is codenamed “N92″ and has reached “engineering verification test” (EVT) status. According to Gruber, that’s just one step below “design verification test,” which is what that stolen iPhone 4 prototype was — meaning the CDMA iPhone is apparently just two hops away from production. Mix in persistent rumors of large CDMA chipset orders these past few weeks and a dash of AT&T hinting that exclusivity might be over , and it’s sounding like ol’ N92 could well arrive in January as first reported by Bloomberg — perhaps at Verizon’s CES press conference .

From the outside of its white box, labeled “Phone no. 4,” it’s clear to see that the Air Phone 4 is trying awfully hard to be an iPhone 4 . But then we already knew that .

HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sexual harassment investigation (updated!) thumbnail

Wild news out of HP just now — CEO Mark Hurd has just resigned over a sexual harassment investigation. Hurd and the HP’s board of directors decided that he should resign following a sexual harassment claim against Hurd and HP by a former marketing contractor — HP claims that although there was no violation of its sexual harassment policy, Hurd violated the company’s standards of business conduct by submitting inaccurate expense reports that covered his relationship with the contractor. CFO Cathie Lesjak is taking over on an interim basis, and she’s actually upping the company’s forecasts for next quarter, saying Mark’s resignation has nothing to do with HP’s performance and everything to do with his behavior.

BlackBerry Torch first hands-on! (update: video) thumbnail

We just got a quick hands-on with the BlackBerry Torch — unfortunately our unit wasn’t powering on. We’re headed back for more in just a second and there’s video on the way, but check the gallery for some hardware shots and some Droid X / iPhone 4 head-to-head action right now! Update: We went back in for round two with a functional device — the hardware is quite nice, and the keyboard feels similar to the Tour / Bold

Someone should really tell T-Mobile USA it’s got a rather large hole that needs plugged.

That’s right, not only does Augen — a company unbeknown to us before yesterday — make an $150 Android 2.1 tablet , but the company is also stocking Kmart shelves with a $99 Android smartbook of sorts. How’d we find out about this one?

$35 tablet from India looks to be worth every paisa (video) thumbnail

We’ve seen some janky tablets over the years, and to be honest this latest one out of India hardly looks posh. But, for the price, it could be pretty amazing: $35. That’s what India’s Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, is saying this device will cost at retail

Swedish Pirate Party launches ISP to raise funds for its impending shutdown trial thumbnail

As a fan of Swedish electoral politics, you’re obviously aware that the Pirate Party (or “Piratpartiet”) has been bedeviling officials in that Nordic country since 2006, doing crazy things like hosting the Pirate Bay’s servers and launching the Relakks commercial darknet — all the while flying the flag for privacy rights, copyright reform, and state transparency.

Man, if you thought the lawsuit action in the mobile space was crazy before, well, you ain’t seen nothing yet — Motorola just sued Huawei and over a dozen former employees for conspiring to steal its wireless trade secrets and other proprietary technology over a period of years starting in 2001. Yeah, it’s crazy.

Google halting Nexus One sales through official store after current inventory depleted thumbnail

We knew this was eventually coming , and here it is: Google is giving everyone the heads-up that it just got a fresh batch of Nexus Ones in stock, and once they’ve been sold through, they’ll no longer be offered directly through the company’s online store. For what it’s worth, the customer service lines will stay open even after that happens — and you’ll still be able to buy a phone through KT in South Korea, Vodafone in Europe, and “possibly other [retailers] based on local market conditions” — but by and large, your average American is going to have a hard time getting one pretty shortly.
