As predictable as the sun rising somewhere over east Japan, the iFixit crew have put their tools and wits to the task of deconstructing the latest generation of iPod touch . Their teardown is still ongoing (exciting, isn’t it?), but here are their observations so far. The new touch is noted as being the easiest to crack open yet, and yes, its retina-busting 640 x 960 LCD is fused to the external glass, just like the iPhone 4

At Apple’s last event, Steve Jobs called the iPod touch the company’s “most popular iPod,” and it’s easy to understand why. In just a few short years, the iPhone-with-no-phone has kept in lockstep with Cupertino’s halo device, benefitting from the same kind of constant hardware and software updating that has helped turned the iPhone into an iconic gadget. The touch has been right alongside the iPhone’s meteoric rise in popularity, becoming the go-to second-pocket slab for millions.

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. Perhaps the most-predicted announcement from Apple’s September 1 press event is the addition of two cameras to the iPod touch.

We’re suckers for wireless speakers, but they have to work. We’re not the least bit interested in streaming technologies that stutter from interference or compress the audio to preserve bandwidth. That’s why Libratone caught our attention here in Berlin with its new Libratone Beat — the “world’s first high-end active speaker with wireless technology,” or so they claim.

No surprise that iHome is first out of the gate with a speaker dock that’s compatible with Apple’s newly-open AirPlay music streaming system, but unfortunately the teaser page is maddeningly light on details — all we know is that it’ll have a rechargeable battery and be available for the holidays. We’re actually pretty stoked for AirPlay gear — the idea of setting up a quick mix-and-match whole-home audio system that can stream lossless audio straight from iTunes seems awfully hard to resist — so we’re eager to hear more about this thing, as well as the other third-party AirPlay devices like receivers and stereos that were promised yesterday. We’ll keep digging for more, so stay tuned.

We’re not quite sure when the Federal Communications Commission got into the habit of tearing devices limb from limb after testing their wireless radiation levels, but we have to say we’re loving the trend — and there’s quite nothing like peering into the juicy innards of a new Apple device. Here, the FCC got its greasy paws on the new Retina Display-packing iPod touch , aka “Apple A1367,” and in the gallery below you can see exactly where Cupertino keeps that A4 processor, 3.44 watt-hour battery, internal antenna, and 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz WiFi. Three new iPods under one roof — how could we not throw them on a table and see how they size up against one another?

Here it is, the new (and completely redesigned) iPod nano . Super thin, super light, and really, the capacitive multitouch works very well. The screen is crisp and top menu navigation is smooth, but can’t say we have great feel for moving back out of sub menus (via swipe or holding down the screen).
