Nikon D3100 to split the D5000 / D3000 difference? thumbnail

We’d obviously take this one with a grain (or two) of salt, but Nikon Rumors has it that Nikon’s fixing to give entry level DSLR buyers yet another option in the not-too-distant future. Of course, with the planet’s largest photo show coming up in just a few months ( Photokina , if you’re curious), it’s about time that some of these rumors start to pick up traction. Truth be told, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the D3100 — a few months ago it was being bandied about as the D4000

Toshiba prepping dual-screen ‘GuideBook’ tablet for June launch? thumbnail

Believe it or not, Toshiba has been toying around with dual-screen tablets at least as far back as 2006 , and it looks like it might be trying its hand at the idea again now that it’s catching on a bit — DigiTimes is reporting that company has a new dual-screen “GuideBook” device on track for a June launch. Unfortunately, the only other details at the moment are that the device will apparently pack two 7-inch displays, and that it will supposedly be manufactured by Toshiba in-house. We’re also assuming / hoping that the company has managed to refine things a bit from the circa-2006 device pictured above

We’re still playing the wait-and-see game when it comes to Skype on webOS and Windows Phone 7 , but it looks as if to-be iPhone 4 owners won’t have to wait long before Skype-based video chatting becomes a reality… if Skype has its way, that is.

If only there were more tablets in the world, you know? Samsung has heard the call, and truth be told they might have a nice crack at creating something desirable. The 7-inch Galaxy Tab (previously referred to as the S-Pad ), runs Android with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top (similar to the Galaxy S sitting next to it)

Tabletex. Yep, that’s what we’re calling this year’s Computex since you truly cannot go a few steps on the show floor without stumbling upon a new tablet of some kind. If you’ve been reading our coverage for the past few days, you know that Intel and Microsoft didn’t show up in Taipei empty handed — both of their booths are incredibly well stocked with new slates

HP CEO: "We didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business" thumbnail

You’d think spending a billion dollars on a smartphone company would indicate a desire to, say, make and sell smartphones, but you’d apparently be thinking wrong: HP CEO Mark Hurd just told investors at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch tech conference that his company “didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business,” and that he’s not going to “spend billions of dollars trying to go into the smartphone business; that doesn’t in any way make any sense.” Yes, that sound you’re hearing is Jon Rubinstein’s heart breaking into a million tiny pieces. According to Hurd, HP was actually more interested in Palm’s IP — specifically webOS, which he wants to put on “tens of millions of HP small form-factor web-connected devices.” Sure, that makes sense, and it lines up perfectly with HP’s plan to ” double down on webOS ” and put it on everything from netbooks and slates to printers , but hey, Mark? You should really look into the smartphone business when you get a second, okay?

Thrustmaster gets fancy with Ferrari Wireless GT Cockpit 430 Scuderia Edition racing wheel thumbnail

And you thought your Driving Force GT was pricey . Thrustmaster is today introducing its newest gaming accessory, a startlingly expensive new racing wheel designed to give PlayStation 3 and PC gamers the chance to feel as if they truly are screaming ahead in hopes of being first to fly under the checkered flag. The Ferrari Wireless GT Cockpit 430 Scuderia Edition is a complete wireless cockpit ensemble, requiring far more space than an NYC studio apartment affords to completely unfold, and given that it weighs 23 pounds, you may need to bust out your Ricky Bobby uniform to make sure you aren’t roughed up when leaning hard into turns

Apple will open international Stores early for iPad launch this Friday, iBooks app available now thumbnail

Apple may be a despot of its own walled garden, but that doesn’t mean it’s not benevolent. The iPad’s international launch on May 28 has prompted the company to open Stores an hour early, at 8AM local time, in order to give its devotees a reprieve from hours of queuing outside. Then again, that little asterix up there points us to an ominous “while supplies last” note at the bottom, which together with current pre-orders being fulfilled at some unidentified point in June, might force the most impatient to just get to the Store even earlier.
