HyperMac Stand doubles as an external battery for your iPad thumbnail

Why settle for a separate iPad stand and external battery when you can have both in one device? Why indeed

HP files for "PalmPad" trademark — a webOS tablet, perhaps? thumbnail

HP’s been extremely direct in saying that it plans to release webOS tablets and other devices in the future, and now that the Palm acquisition is complete , it looks like those plans are starting to move forward — the company just filed a trademark application for “PalmPad,” which certainly sounds like a webOS tablet to us. We don’t know much apart from that, but it’s certainly an encouraging sign — and we can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for a name that harkens back to the glory days of the PalmPilot. Now we’re just wondering when ( this fall

Google pointer activity monitoring could influence search engine results, probably won’t thumbnail

For the latest development in Google’s mad quest for search engine efficacy, the company was granted a patent titled, in the necessarily wordy way that these things are, “System and method for modulating search relevancy using pointer activity monitoring.” Essentially, the idea here is that mouse pointer movements can be interpreted to gauge someone’s interest, so Google would track the mouse as it moves in and out of predefined regions of a web page, or hovers over certain regions for a predefined period of time. Apparently, the pointer is sort of seen as a surrogate for the eye, telling the search engine provider where your eye is wandering

Swiftkey beta brings new keyboard, world class predictive text to Android thumbnail

The software and language engineers at Swiftkey have been toiling on this app for the past two years, and at long last, it’s being made available for precisely nothing to anxious Android users. Hot on the heels of Swype’s own beta , the Swiftkey beta is now available to download directly from the App Market, and once installed (along with language packs of your choice), it can be used in place of your stock Android soft keyboard. We’ve never been the biggest fan of Google’s factory keys, and while we still feel that Swiftkey’s letters are a tad on the skinny side, it’s definitely an improvement

Android 2.2 ported to HTC Desire, working quite well thumbnail

No patience to wait until Q3 for an official Froyo build? Fret not, dear Desire owners, as udK_dev has managed to push out a near-perfect Android 2.2 port that’s working spectacularly well so far. As you’d expect, HTC’s Sense overlay is indeed baked in, and while there are still a few quirks here and there, users seem to be generally pleased with how it’s going

How-to: Install Flash on your jailbroken iPad (for real) thumbnail

We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It’s called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn’t do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we’re told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let’s try this out, shall we

Apple hiring iPhone antenna engineers for some reason thumbnail

Three Apple job postings for iPhone / iPad antenna engineers to “Define and implement antenna system architecture to optimize the radiation performance for wireless portable devices.” All three were posted on June 23rd, the same day that we started seeing widespread reporting of the left-handed reception issues . Coincidence?

Verizon Wireless changing to Verizon this Sunday, massive new branding campaign planned? (update: no name change) thumbnail

So Droid Life — which has earned itself a solid record in the rumor game as of late — is reporting that Verizon Wireless will be dropping the “Wireless” portion of its name this weekend and announcing that it won’t be carrying the iPhone 4 , instead concentrating on its high-end line of Android devices that it’s done an admirable job of building up lately. We can’t speak to the validity of the iPhone stuff, but we’re starting to believe the rest now that we’ve been independently tipped on a new branding campaign that’ll focus on the tagline “Rule the Air.” Interestingly, it would seem that changing the name to Verizon risks confusing the company with one of its two corporate parents — Verizon Communications — which leads us to wonder whether this is a sign that Vodafone could be getting close to relinquishing control of its sizable minority share after years of speculation .
